Pumping

Indications: muscle contractures, diseases affecting the joints. It also has a beneficial effect on both blood and lymphatic circulation.

It is a technique of the Bienfait method. Pompage is a movement that the therapist carries out on different body areas to bring a body segment from a state of tension to a state of relaxation, alternating them with a regular rhythm. In applying the technique, three times must be considered: the tension, maintaining tension and relaxation. By varying the pace and tension, different effects can be achieved. Slow pompages, for example, are useful for contractures because they induce muscle relaxation, for the treatment of muscle-fibrous retractions but also for the joints (Bienfait suggests a systematic use in the treatment of osteoarthritis) because they reduce the rigidity that limits the physiological movement.

Pompages also have a beneficial effect on both blood and lymphatic circulation. They favor the supply of oxygen and nourishment to the tissues and the elimination of waste products which in the jargon we call catabolites and have a powerful analgesic effect.
